Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is a technique which measures the weight loss of a substance as it is heated at a controlled rate or held at a given temperature for a specified time. The purge gas which blankets the sample can also be controlled (typically inert argon or air). This technique is very useful when the weight loss data is needed at particular temperatures or times, as compared to loss on drying or loss on ignition data where the total weight loss is determined up to a predefined temperature.
General Applications:
TGA-FTIR is a technique whereby the effluent gases from the weight loss events in the TGA are carried through a special interface and analyzed by FTIR. This enables the weight loss data at a given temperature to be correlated with identification of the components evolved.
